Wave washers, sometimes called wave springs, have multiple waves in the axial direction, usually three but more often six. By increasing the number of waves, the thickness for a given load can be reduced by reducing deflection and increasing radial stress. Wave uniformity is important because the load/deflection rate does not start until all waves are uniformly loaded. Wave washers are ideal for obtaining loads when the load is static or when the operating range is small and axial space is limited. These washers are often used as pads or shims to accommodate variations where some pressure is required on free elements in the assembly. They can be used in place of spring washers to avoid surface damage. Wave washers are comparable in size.
