Projection Weld Studs & Screws

Proj Weld Studs

Stud welding refers to joining circular-shaped parts with flat workpieces using a welding arc and the application of a pressing force. Projection weld studs and screws are particular types of fasteners that are specifically designed to be welded to another object. There is a wide range of spot weld stud, and tab weld stud options, depending on the specific application.

These studs have a broad base that distributes the load and projections that concentrate the weld. The length listed is the overall length.

Choose studs with below-head projection for a stronger hold that uses the full strength of the fastener. Pass these studs through a hole and weld them in place.

Choose studs with above-head projection to weld the screw directly to the surface of the material for a smoother appearance.

1. The working principle of projection welding:

Projection welding is an evolution of spot welding. Generally speaking, a mountain point is punched on one of the two plates and then welded. The concentration of current overcomes the defect of nugget offset during spot welding. One or more nuggets form at the joint.

2. Features of the projection welding process:

The electrode must drop rapidly during projection welding as the bump is sub-collapsed; otherwise, the spatter will occur due to pressure loss. Therefore, a projection welding machine with good electrode followability should be used.

The electrode pressure plays a crucial role in projection welding. It should be set to ensure that the bumps are completely sub-collapsed at the welding temperature, thereby ensuring a close fit of the workpieces. If the pressure is too high, the bumps will be crushed prematurely, leading to a loss of function in projection welding.

Reduced flow density can significantly impact the strength of the joint in projection welding. If the pressure is too small, it can lead to sub-heavy splashing, highlighting the need for careful control of these factors.

Usually, the welding time of projection welding is longer than that of spot welding, and the flow is smaller than that of spot welding. Multi-point projection welding has a slightly longer welding time than single-point projection welding, which reduces the difference in heating at each point caused by inconsistent bump heights.

The current required for each spot of projection welding is smaller than that needed for spot welding in the same place, but the current must be able to melt the bump before it is completely crushed. The welding current is required for each bump multiplied by the number of bumps.

Welding screws and welding pins with elongated projection lug in the strength category 8.8 and stainless steel A2-50 are generally in stock here.

Welding screws and pins in the strength category 8.8 are supplied stained and lightly oiled, i.e., without surface protection.
