Properties and cutting characteristics of stainless steel
1. Martensitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel: its alloy composition is mainly Cr and its content is 12 to 8%. Commonly available are 1Cr13, 2Cr13, 3Cr13, 4Cr13, 9Cr18, 30Cr13Mo, etc. After quenching and tempering, it has proper hardness, strength, and good anti-oxidation properties. During cutting and machining, the chips are easy to abrade and wear the tool. When the carbon content increases to 0.4 to 0.5%, the cutting machinability of martensitic stainless steel becomes better. The main alloy composition of ferritic stainless steel is also Cr, the content is similar to martensitic stainless steel. In the cutting process, its performance is similar to the former, except that its hardness is lower and toughness is increased. In short, these two kinds of stainless steel are in the cutting process as long as the choice of tool material is appropriate, with the appropriate geometric angle, cutting processing is still not very difficult.
2. Austenitic stainless steel and austenitic plus ferritic stainless steel: the composition of these two stainless steel contains chromium, but also contains a fairly high nickel (generally 7 to 20%), containing more nickel or manganese, stable organizational structure, heat treatment is difficult to make it strengthen. This type of steel in the cutting process chip continuous, fracture difficult, while easy to produce work hardening. Austenitic-ferritic stainless steel only contains a certain amount of ferrite in the organization, there is also a certain amount of hardness of intermetallic compounds, the rest of the properties are similar to austenitic steel, so cutting, these two materials are more difficult to process. The grades of austenitic stainless steel are 1Cr18N9Ti, 00Cr18Ni10, O0Cr18Ni14M02Cu2, 0Cr18Ni12M02Ti, 2Cr13Mn9Ni4, etc. Common austenitic plus ferritic stainless steels are 0Cr21N95Ti, 1Cr18Mn10Ni5, 1Cr18Ni11Si4A1Ti, etc. There is also precipitation hardening stainless steel in the stainless steel. This type of steel contains high chromium and nickel but also contains thallium, aluminum, titanium, molybdenum, and other alloy elements that can play a precipitation-hardening effect so that the steel has high strength and hardness.
Cutting processing characteristics: the processing difficulty of stainless steel from easy to difficult order is ferritic → martensitic → austenitic → austenitic plus ferritic → precipitation hardening. The cutting and machining characteristics of stainless steel are described as follows:
1. The trend of machining hardening is serious: the processing of stainless steel are machining hardening tendency, especially austenitic and austenitic plus ferritic stainless steel is particularly prominent. The hardness of the hardened layer can reach HV560, more than twice the hardness of the raw material, and the depth of the hardened layer can reach 1/3 of the depth of cut or greater. The reason for the hardening is the good plasticity of stainless steel (§ > 35%), such as 0Cr18Ni9, 1Cr18Ni9Ti, 2Cr18Ni19, Cr18Mn10Ni5M03 elongation are greater than 40%, is 210-240% of 40Cr, is more than 150% of 45# steel, so in plastic deformation lattice distortion is serious, the strengthening factor is large.
2. Small thermal conductivity: the thermal conductivity of stainless steel is small, that is, poor thermal conductivity, such as austenitic stainless steel is only about 28% of the general steel, so the cutting process in the cutting can not be timely through the workpiece, chip conduction out, and cause a large number of cutting heat concentrated near the cutting edge, so that the cutting temperature is greatly increased, such as 18-8 type stainless steel cutting temperature up to The cutting temperature of 45# steel is only 700~7500C.
3. Cutting force: high-temperature strength of stainless steel, high hardness, such as austenitic stainless steel, for example, its temperature up to 7000C, its comprehensive mechanical properties are still higher than the general structural steel, coupled with its plasticity, good toughness, so the energy consumed in the cutting process, so that the cutting force increases, such as turning 1Cr18Ni19Ti unit cutting force than 45# steel unit cutting force of 25% higher.
4 chip is not easy to break, easy to produce chip tumor: due to the toughness of stainless steel, plasticity is large, so in the turning process, the chip continuous, which not only affects the smooth operation, causing safety accidents but also squeeze has been processed surface. Stainless steel contains Cr, Ni, Ti, Mo, and other elements, these elements and other metals are new and strong, easy to produce adhesion phenomenon, and the formation of chip tumors. Such as the austenitic stainless steel Lang brittle zone occurs at about 2000C or lower temperature, while the carbon steel Lang brittle zone occurs at about 3000C, which means that cutting austenitic stainless steel chip tumor temperature is lower than that of carbon steel.
