In a comparison of 3Crl3 steel and 40 steel, 45 steel, and other carbon structural steel mechanical properties, 3Crl3 steel strength, elongation, section shrinkage, impact properties, and other indicators are higher than 40 steel, 45 steel, is a high strength, good plasticity of the medium carbon martensitic stainless steel. Due to severe machining hardening during cutting, cutting resistance, and high cutting temperature, causing serious tool wear, the number of sharpening increases, increasing the downtime and machine tool adjustment time, reducing productivity. And because of the easy sticky knife, the chip tumor causes changes in the size of the workpiece and affects the surface roughness, and the chip is not easy to curl and break, and damages the workpiece that has been processed surface, directly affecting the quality of the parts. The process of cutting 45 steel cannot be used to cut 3Crl3, and the processing method of the general lathe cannot be copied to the automatic lathe. Because the general automatic lathe is loaded with fewer tools, it is required that the best tool can make the processing surface achieve the required size and surface roughness, to ensure a higher productivity.
The main technical measures taken
1) The use of heat treatment to change the hardness of the material
Martensitic stainless steel the different hardness after heat treatment, and the impact on the turning process is great. The material of the turning tool on the different hardness of the 3Cr13 steel after heat treatment of the turning situation. It can be seen that the annealed state of martensitic stainless steel, although the hardness is low, poor turning performance, material plasticity, and toughness, uneven organization, adhesion, fusion, and cutting process is easy to produce tool tumor, not easy to obtain a better surface quality. The 3Cr13 material with hardness below HRC30 after tempering is better machinability and easy to achieve better surface quality. While the hardness is greater than HRC30 when the machined parts, although the surface quality is better, but the tool is easy to wear. First tempering treatment, hardness to HRC25 ~ 30, and then the cutting process.
2) Selection of tool material
The external round turning tool with TiC-TiCN-TiN composite coated insert has higher durability, good surface quality of the workpiece, and high productivity. Because this coated carbide material inserts, with better strength and toughness, and because of its surface with higher hardness and wear resistance, smaller friction coefficient, and higher heat resistance, and become a good tool material for automatic lathe turning stainless steel, the preferred material for processing 3Cr13 stainless steel external back turning tool.
3) Selection of the geometric angle and structure of the tool
Good tool material, the selection of a reasonable geometric angle is particularly important.

The surface roughness of the cutting edge should be Ra0.4-0.2μm. In the structure of the tool, the external circular turning tool adopts the external sloping circular chip breaking groove, the chip curl radius is large at the tip of the tool, and the chip curl radius is small at the outer edge, the chip turns to the surface to be processed and breaks, and the shipbreaking situation is good.
