Thousands of years ago, humans used red copper to make tools, weapons, and decorative objects. Red copper can be used directly on its own or mixed with other metals to form alloy copper. Red copper has high electrical and thermal conductivity and is relatively soft, and is now commonly used to make electrical wire.
Brass: Brass is a copper alloy that contains a certain amount of zinc. In addition, brass can have other metals added, such as tin, iron, aluminum, lead, silicon, and manganese. The addition of other metals enables unique properties to be achieved, for example, the zinc content in brass contributes to the ductility and strength of brass-based copper materials. The higher the zinc content in brass, the more resilient the alloy will be. In addition, depending on the amount of zinc added, the color can vary from red to even yellow. Brass is mainly used for decorative purposes because it resembles gold. Due to its durability and workability, it is also often used in the manufacture of musical instruments.
1. Corrosion resistance: Red brass rusts easily and after a period of oxidation, it forms a copper-green color. The copper-green color prevents further corrosion of the red brass surface. Brass is much more resistant to corrosion and does not rust easily.
2. Electrical conductivity: red copper has excellent electrical conductivity, and is used as a measure of electrical conductivity, that is, the electrical conductivity of red copper is defined as 100%, from which to measure the electrical conductivity of other metals. By this standard, brass has an electrical conductivity of 28%.
3. Thermal conductivity: The thermal conductivity of pure metals does not change with increasing temperature, while the thermal conductivity of alloys increases with increasing temperature. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of red copper does not change and that of brass does.
4. Hardness: The hardness of a material refers to its ability to resist local deformation. As far as the hardness index is concerned, brass has a hardness of 3-4 and red copper 2.5-3, therefore brass is harder and the higher the zinc content, the harder brass is.
5. Durability: The durability of a material is the ability of the material to maintain its function without excessive repair or maintenance when faced with normal operational challenges during its half-life. The durability of red copper and brass is essentially the same.
6. Machinability: The machinability of a material means that the material can be cut to achieve an acceptable surface finish. This includes cutting, machining, and die casting. Machinability can also be considered in terms of how the material is manufactured. Brass is more machinable than red brass.
7. Weldability: Red brass can be welded more easily than brass, although brass with a zinc content higher than 20% has good weldability. Finally, cast brass metal can hardly be welded.
8. Color: Red brass has a reddish-brown color, while brass has different colors depending on the metal elements added, including gold, red-gold, or silver.
