Main Technical Requirements for Shaft Components
(1) Machining Precision:
a) Dimensional Accuracy: The main surfaces of shaft components can be divided into two types. One type is the outer cylindrical journal that mates with the inner ring of a bearing, known as the bearing journal. It is used to determine the position of the shaft and support it. The dimensional accuracy requirement for the bearing journal is generally IT5 to IT7. The other type is the journal that mates with various transmission components, known as the mating journal. Its precision is slightly lower, usually IT6 to IT9.
b) Geometrical Accuracy: This mainly refers to the roundness, cylindricity, and other essential surface characteristics of the journal surface, outer taper surface, tapered hole, etc. The errors should generally be limited within the dimensional tolerance range. Additional geometric accuracy requirements need to be specified on the part drawing for precision shafts.
c) Mutual Positioning Accuracy: This includes coaxially of internal and external surfaces, radial runout of circles, perpendicularity of important end face to the axis, the parallelism between end faces, etc.
(2) Surface Roughness:
The machined surfaces of shafts have requirements for surface roughness, which are determined based on machining feasibility and economy. The surface roughness for bearing journals is typically 0.2 to 1.6 micrometers, while for mating journals, it is 0.4 to 3.2 micrometers.
