Difference between Dowel Pin and Dowel Shaft: The purpose of a dowel pin is for positioning and securing components. It comes in two types: cylindrical and tapered.


1. Dowel pins are usually installed by press-fitting or tapping with soft metal. They are typically tapered and have pointed ends or tips, made of wood or small metal nails, used to fasten or repair (wood boards, tiles, shoe soles, shoe uppers, furniture molds, and components) or to fill holes.


2. Dowel pins play a significant role in the connection of mechanical components. Based on their shape and function, they can be classified as split pins, taper pins, straight pins, or dowel pins with slots. Among these types, straight pins, taper pins, and split pins are widely used and indispensable fasteners in production.


3. Dowel shafts, on the other hand, are a type of standardized fastener that can be used for both static fixed connections and relative motion with the connected components. They are primarily used at hinge joints of two parts to form hinge connections. Dowel shafts are typically secured with split pins, ensuring reliable operation and easy disassembly. The international standard for dowel shafts is ISO 2341: 1986.

Difference: Dowel pins come in various types, including cylindrical pins, taper pins, spring pins, and dowel shafts. Most dowel pins are used for fixed connections, while dowel shafts are commonly used at movable hinge points.

1. Common materials used for dowel pins are as follows:

45# steel has a tensile strength of 600 MPa, yield strength of 355 MPa, elongation of 16%, cross-sectional shrinkage of 40%, and impact toughness of 39J. 45# steel is a commonly used material for shaft components. After quenching (or normalizing), it can provide good cutting performance, as well as higher strength and comprehensive mechanical properties such as toughness. The surface hardness can reach 45-52 HRC after quenching. 40Cr and other alloy structural steels are suitable for shaft components with medium precision and higher speeds. After quenching and tempering, these steels exhibit good comprehensive mechanical properties. 45# steel is widely used in mechanical manufacturing due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, it is a medium carbon steel with poor quenching performance. 45# steel can be hardened to HRC42-46.


2. 40Cr is a commonly used material for shaft components. After quenching (or normalizing), it can provide good cutting performance, as well as higher strength and comprehensive mechanical properties such as toughness. The surface hardness can reach 45-52 HRC after quenching. 40Cr and other alloy structural steels are suitable for shaft components with medium precision and higher speeds. After quenching and tempering, these steels exhibit good comprehensive mechanical properties. 40Cr steel is one of the most widely used steels in the mechanical manufacturing industry. It has good comprehensive mechanical properties after quenching and tempering, good low-temperature impact toughness, and low-notch sensitivity. The steel has good hardenability and can achieve through hardening with water quenching up to Ф28-60mm or oil quenching up to Ф15-40mm. In addition to quenching and tempering, this steel is also suitable for cyaniding and high-frequency quenching treatments. It has good cutting performance, with a relative machinability of 60% when the hardness is HB174-229.


3. 30CrMnTi has higher strength and hardenability compared to 20CrMnTi steel, but slightly lower impact toughness. It is mainly used as carburized steel, and after carburization, it can be directly quenched by cooling. It has high bending strength and good wear resistance. It can be used after low-temperature tempering or quenching. It has moderate machinability. It is used in the manufacturing of heavy-duty carburized parts with larger cross-sections and heavily loaded gears, gear shafts, and worm gears in the tractor industry.


4. 35CrMnSi steel is a low-alloy ultra-high-strength steel with good comprehensive mechanical properties after heat treatment, including high strength, sufficient toughness, good hardenability, weldability, and processability. However, it has low corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. It is suitable for use after low-temperature tempering or isothermal quenching. 35CrMnSi steel is a material with good hardenability, and appropriate heat treatment can provide good comprehensive mechanical properties in terms of strength, hardness, toughness, and fatigue strength. It can adapt to complex working conditions in coal mining production.
