1. Electroplating: The parts to be plated are immersed in an aqueous solution containing metal compounds, and an electric current is passed through the plating solution to deposit and plate the metal onto the parts. Common electroplating includes zinc plating, copper plating, nickel plating, chrome plating, copper-nickel alloy plating, and sometimes includes processes like blackening and phosphating.


2. Mechanical plating: It involves impacting the surface of the product with particles of the plating metal and cold welding the coating onto the surface of the product. Generally, screws are often electroplated, but hot-dip galvanizing is used for outdoor applications such as hex wood screws used in power and highways.


3. Hot-dip galvanizing: It involves immersing carbon steel parts in a molten zinc bath at a temperature of about 510°C. The result is the gradual transformation of the iron-zinc alloy on the surface of the steel into passivated zinc on the outer surface of the product.


Currently, the surface treatment technologies for automotive fasteners mainly include oxidation (blackening), phosphating, electroplating (zinc, zinc-nickel alloy, decorative chrome), and Dacromet coating. It is well known that oxidation treatment has disadvantages such as high energy consumption, unstable process, and weak adhesion of the film. Phosphating films have poor corrosion resistance. Electroplating and Dacromet coatings contain Cr6+ and are not environmentally friendly. The corrosion resistance of regular electroplated coatings can reach 500-1000 hours, but they are costly, have poor resistance to moisture (only 120 hours of humid-heat resistance), and are not wear-resistant.
