The rough datum uses the unfinished surface on the blank as the reference for positioning, while the fine datum uses the processed surface as the reference.
Criteria for selecting fine datum:
Coincidence criterion: The design data of the machined surface should be selected as accurately as possible to prevent data misalignment and positioning errors.
Consistency criterion: To ensure the relative positional accuracy between the machined surfaces, as many surfaces as possible on the workpiece should be machined using the same set of fine data.
The criterion for mutual reference between machined surfaces: The repeated machining method of two mating surfaces can be used as a reference for each other.
Self-datum criterion: Some surface precision machining processes require small and uniform machining tolerances, often using the surface itself as the accuracy reference. It is sometimes impossible to satisfy all four criteria simultaneously, and the decision must be based on the actual situation.
Criteria for selecting rough datum:
The rough datum should be used in the first machining process of the workpiece. Whether the rough datum is selected correctly not only affects the processing of the first operation but also has a significant impact on the entire process of the workpiece.
