CNC machines are used to manufacture parts within a car engine, for lighting, suspension components, exhaust parts, and many other parts of the car manufacturing process. For large production runs of car manufacturing, consistency is key.
Structure of Automotive Ball Stud
There are mainly two types of structures for ball studs: one is the combination of spherical studs and integral ball seats, and the other is the combination of hemispherical studs and spherical components. In the past, the structure used to employ spiral spring arrows for preloading and compensating for wear. However, nowadays, synthetic resin ball seats with elasticity and lubrication properties are widely used. This not only reduces costs but also improves handling stability. Furthermore, there have been significant improvements in the materials and shapes of dust covers and the types of grease used. The grease nozzle has been eliminated, achieving a maintenance-free structure.
The ball stud mainly consists of end caps, ball studs, ball seats, and dust covers.
Processing Technology of Automotive Ball Studs
Ball studs are important connecting components in automobiles and tractors, requiring high physical and mechanical properties. In the past, these components were mainly produced using cutting processes, but the strength and hardness of the materials could not be guaranteed. Consequently, frequent part damage and replacement were common during actual usage. Currently, cold-forming methods, such as impact extrusion, are commonly used for ball stud production. However, the process design is still primarily based on experience, and there are still instances of improper distribution of processing steps and mold structure design, which require further research.
Taking the automotive ball stud as an example, with material 20Cr and utilizing precision cold forging forming technology, the structural characteristics of the component were analyzed, and the design of a three-step impact extrusion process was completed. Meanwhile, finite element simulation was employed to analyze the forming process of the ball stud through impact extrusion. The simulation results indicated that the extrusion process design was reasonable and capable of ensuring the forming quality of the component. The ball stud component is a rotationally symmetric body with an axial axis and consists primarily of a stem portion and a ball head. Structural features mainly include four important characteristics: a bottom stem portion with a diameter of 9.10mm, an intermediate stem portion with a length of 15.0mm, and a right-angle transition at the connection between the bottom stem portion and the intermediate stem portion. The intermediate stem portion also has a hexagonal step with a length of 6mm. At the top of the stem portion, there is a ball head with a 2mm flange.
