When machining stainless steel long shafts, the chips experience strong friction with the tool's cutting edge during the chip formation process. It becomes difficult to break the chips, and the cutting edge of the tool wears out to form a rounded chip groove. The chip groove should have a certain inclination, with deeper front and shallower rear sections. This facilitates chip formation and chip breaking. The tool should have a larger back angle of 10° and an appropriate cutting edge radius of 0.2 to 0.8. A larger rake angle should be chosen to create a compressive stress state in the axial force direction, which significantly improves cutting conditions, enhances the quality of the machined stainless steel long shafts, and reduces tool wear.


1. When cutting stainless steel long shafts, a larger approach angle should be used to reduce the resistance encountered during chip separation and removal, decrease cutting forces and heat generation, minimize vibrations during cutting, and mitigate work hardening effects. Generally, an approach angle of 15° to 30° is selected.


2. Use coolant for forced cooling of the workpiece. Stainless steel has a high coefficient of thermal expansion, and the cutting heat has a significant impact on the workpiece during turning. Coolant not only carries away a large amount of heat, resulting in a direct reduction of the temperature in the cutting zone and at the cutting edge of the tool but also provides lubrication, reducing friction and improving the physical properties of the workpiece material. Lubrication can reduce cutting forces by 15% to 30% and minimize bending and deformation of the stainless steel long shaft caused by cutting heat. Cooling of the carbide cutting tool should be done before the tool starts cutting to avoid cooling the cutting portion after it has already heated up, which could lead to cracking of the carbide inserts. Measurement of the workpiece should be performed only after sufficient cooling to avoid measurement errors.


3. When turning stainless steel long shafts, it is often necessary to reduce cutting speed and increase the feed rate to minimize vibration and deformation during machining.


4. When turning thin and long stainless steel shafts, it is advisable to use a three-jaw chuck, tool holder, and center frame simultaneously to balance the cutting forces, prevent vibration, and improve the rigidity of the stainless steel long shaft.


5. The use of automatic retractable elastic centers helps overcome the deformation of stainless steel shafts caused by thermal elongation. Simultaneously, reverse feeding should be employed, where the tool feed is directed from the chuck towards the tailstock, keeping the workpiece in a tensile state to prevent bending deformation.
