Nuts: The use of hexagon flange nuts produces the same effect as hexagon flange bolts. If the structure allows, hexagon flange nuts should be prioritized. For positions with special anti-loosening requirements, consider using effective torque locking nuts, such as all-metal locking nuts and non-metallic insert locking nuts. It should be noted that all-metal locking nuts, which rely on thread deformation for locking, are not suitable for frequently disassembled positions. Non-metallic insert locking nuts have good reusability but, according to fastener standards, their application temperature should be ≤120°C. It is important to confirm the torque requirements for effective torque-locking nuts as the installation may require additional torque to overcome nut deformation or the force generated by non-metallic inserts. Simply using the torque value of ordinary nuts may not provide sufficient clamping force and could pose risks.
Materials and Heat Treatment: Automotive high-strength bolts generally refer to products of grade 8.8 or higher. They are required to have high tensile strength, yield ratio, and excellent low-temperature impact performance. One of the manufacturing challenges lies in the heat treatment of high-strength bolts. The materials selected for these bolts include SWRCH35K, 10B21, 10B33, 35CrMo, 42CrMo, or 20MnTiB steel. The mechanical performance test results of high-strength fasteners are critical quality indicators and important factors related to safety.SWRCH35K and 10B21 steel, in particular, have issues with poor hardenability. Therefore, effective control of the heat treatment process is crucial for achieving the desired mechanical properties of high-strength bolts. To ensure the quality of heat treatment for automotive high-strength bolts, the steel is controlled in the following three aspects: Carbon content is controlled at the upper-middle range to improve the strength and toughness of the steel while reducing the tendency for segregation.
1. Alloy elements are controlled within the upper limits to enhance hardenability and improve strength and toughness.
2. Harmful residual elements such as phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) content are minimized to ensure the purity of the steel.
3. Grade 8.8 and 10.9 bolts, nuts, screws, and studs are commonly used in automotive applications.
