Advantages of zinc-nickel alloy surface treatment for fasteners: Among the components that ensure the structural stability and functionality of industrial products, fastener industrial connectors play a leading role, and the quality of fasteners is a key condition for meeting quality standards in the production of industrial products during their service life. The need for high quality is reflected in the continuous change of surface treatment from pure zinc layer to zinc alloy coating, which is due to the ability of zinc-nickel alloy coating to produce a higher level of corrosion protection.


1. The main advantage of zinc-nickel coatings is that they provide superior corrosion protection, independent of the post-treatment. The protection of a zinc or zinc-iron coating depends heavily on the post-treatment, most importantly the application of the sealing layer. Once the post-treatment layer is destroyed, corrosion will proceed at an accelerated rate and produce more white corrosion products.


2. In addition to the low corrosion of Zn-Ni alloy, it also has high wear-resistant alloy properties with a hardness of 500 HV-550 HV (14% Ni). High-strength fasteners with a tensile strength of 1000n/mm² (performance class 10.9 and above) are at risk of hydrogen embrittlement. This is a critical factor as the tensile strength of the fastener increases. Zinc-nickel alloys are unique in that they greatly reduce the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. Pure zinc coatings or other zinc alloy coatings have a much higher risk of hydrogen embrittlement.


This property of zinc-nickel alloys makes them the preferred alternative to cadmium in the aerospace industry, even in high-strength steel materials of 1400 n/mm, where surface-treated zinc-nickel alloys are used in the manufacture of high-strength fasteners. The thermal resistance of zinc-nickel coatings maintains corrosion protection even when subjected to high temperatures. This makes zinc-nickel surface treatment coatings the preferred choice, for example, for automotive applications - brake components or engine compartment components.
