Cathodic Electrodeposition Coating Process:
In order to improve the surface treatment quality of fasteners and meet environmental regulations, automotive companies use the cathodic electrodeposition coating process to treat bolts and other components. Different process schemes are adopted based on the quality requirements of the fasteners, achieving salt spray resistance tests of 240-1000 hours or more. The friction coefficient of the paint film is suitable, it does not affect product assembly, and it can replace the plating passivation process, which is beneficial for the environment. The cathodic electrodeposition coating process has a high degree of mechanization, environmental friendliness, and excellent corrosion resistance. It has been used in vehicle coatings for many years. According to the types and performance requirements of automotive fasteners, tests were conducted on high-strength 8.8 and 10.9-grade bolts used in vehicle chassis, engines, and transmissions.
The proposed schemes are as follows:
① Black cathodic electrodeposition coating, used for coating fasteners.
② Black cathodic electrodeposition coating with adjusted formulation, suitable for coating fasteners.
③ Black cathodic electrodeposition coating, used for coating general components.
40cr alloy structural steel, 40cr is the grade of alloy structural steel. The main components of this type of steel are carbon, silicon, manganese, and chromium, which have the advantages of good tensile strength and yield strength, moderate price, easy processing, good comprehensive mechanical properties, and good hardenability. However, the weldability of alloy structural steel is relatively poor, and cracks are prone to appear during quenching and welding. Alloy structural steel also belongs to medium carbon quenched and tempered steel and cold heading die steel, which is mostly used in the machinery manufacturing industry. After processing, they can be used to make medium-load mechanical parts, high-load, impact parts, etc., such as automobile steering Sections, machine tool gears, spindles, collars, connecting rods, screws, nuts, etc. 40Cr steel is one of the most widely used steels in machinery manufacturing. After quenching and tempering treatment, it has good comprehensive mechanical properties, good low-temperature impact toughness, and low-notch sensitivity. The steel has good hardenability. It can be hardened to Ф28-60mm when water quenching, and Ф15-40mm when oil quenching. In addition to quenching and tempering, this steel is also suitable for cyaniding and high-frequency quenching. The machinability is good, when the hardness is 174-229HB, the relative machinability is 60%.Several key properties of the coating (plating) layer on fasteners were tested:
a. Corrosion resistance (salt spray test).
b. Resistance to humidity and heat.
c. Assembly performance.
1. The longer the salt spray test and humidity and heat resistance, the better, while ensuring the assembly performance. The paint film does not peel off when assembled with pneumatic wrenches. These are the key technologies for using the electrodeposition coating process on fasteners.
2. By adopting the three schemes of electrodeposition coatings ①, ②, and ③, after 500 hours, there were no changes on the paint film surface. The total friction coefficient and the coefficient of friction variation (mean value) were better than that of galvanized parts. The optimal scheme was electrodeposition coating ①, with a coating thickness of 15-18μm, a salt spray resistance test of 240-1000 hours, and a relatively low comprehensive cost of 15-20 yuan/mm2.
3. The application test of electrodeposition coatings on automotive fasteners resulted in the following conclusions:
The process scheme of using electrodeposition coatings for the surface treatment of fasteners is feasible.
Special electrodeposition coatings for fasteners must be used to meet the quality requirements of surface treatment.
Compared to the galvanization process, the electrodeposition coating process has improved various indicators and lower costs.
